Planning to sell your car in Connecticut but can’t find the title? You're not alone—it’s a common issue. The good news is that replacing a lost or damaged car title is a fairly simple process. Whether you're selling your vehicle privately, trading it in, or selling it to a company like ours, you’ll need a valid title to complete the sale.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting a duplicate title in Connecticut.

Replacing a Title in Connecticut

If your vehicle was last titled in Connecticut, the registered owner can request a duplicate by completing the Duplicate Title Application Request form. This form is available on the Connecticut DMV website and must be filled out before submission.

You can submit the completed application in one of two ways:

Apply in Person

Bring the form to any DMV Hub Office or Limited Service Office in Connecticut—except for the Putnam Office, which does not handle title requests.

  • Processing time: Approximately 15 business days
  • Fee: $25

Apply by Mail

If visiting in person isn’t convenient, you can also mail the application to:

Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles
Attn: Title Unit
60 State Street
Wethersfield, CT 06161

  • Processing time: Around 15 business days
  • Fee: $25

Titled in Another State?

If your vehicle was last titled outside of Connecticut, you’ll need to apply for a duplicate title through that state’s DMV. Connecticut can only issue a duplicate for vehicles originally titled within the state.
