If you're getting ready to sell your car in Texas but can’t find the title, don’t worry—it’s a common issue with a simple solution. Whether you're selling your car privately or to a car-buying service like ours, having a valid vehicle title is required to complete the sale legally and efficiently.
Here’s how to request a duplicate car title in Texas if yours has been lost, stolen, or damaged.
Replacing a Title in Texas
If your vehicle was last titled in Texas, the registered owner can request a duplicate title by filling out the Application for a Certified Copy of Title. This form is available from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and must be completed before submission.
You have two main options for submitting the application:
Option 1: Apply in Person
You can take your completed form to any Vehicle Titles and Registration Regional Office in Texas.
- Processing time: Same day—you’ll receive your title before you leave
- Fee: $5.45
Option 2: Apply by Mail
If it’s more convenient, you can also mail your completed application and payment to:
Texas Department of Motor Vehicles
1601 Southwest Parkway, Suite A
Wichita Falls, TX 76302
- Processing time: At least 15 days
- Fee: $2
If Your Vehicle Was Titled in Another State
If the vehicle was last titled outside of Texas, you’ll need to apply for a duplicate title through the DMV in that state. Texas can only issue duplicates for vehicles that were originally titled in-state.
