If you're ready to sell your vehicle in Massachusetts but can't find your title, don't stress, it's a common issue, and the fix is straightforward. Whether you're selling to a private buyer, trading it in, or working with a car-buying service like ours, a valid title is required to transfer ownership.

Here’s everything you need to know to get a duplicate car title in Massachusetts.

Replacing a Title in Massachusetts

If your car was last titled in Massachusetts, the registered owner can apply for a duplicate title through the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). You’ll need to fill out a Duplicate Title Application, which is available through the RMV.

There are three ways to submit your completed form:

1. Apply Online

The fastest way to request a duplicate title is through the Massachusetts RMV online portal.

  • Processing time: Typically 2 business days
  • Fee: $25

2. Apply in Person

You can also submit your application at a local RMV branch office.

  • Processing time: 7–10 business days
  • Fee: $25

3. Apply by Mail

If you prefer, you can mail your application and payment to:

Registry of Motor Vehicles
Title Division
P.O. Box 55885
Boston, MA 02205-5885

  • Processing time: 7–10 business days
  • Fee: $25

If the Vehicle Was Titled in Another State

If your car was last titled outside of Massachusetts, you’ll need to request a duplicate title through the DMV in that state. Massachusetts can only issue a duplicate for vehicles originally titled within the state.
