If you're planning to sell your car in Pennsylvania but can’t find your title, don’t worry, it happens. The good news is that getting a duplicate title in Pennsylvania is a fairly straightforward process. Whether you’re selling to a private buyer, a dealership, or a car-buying service like ours, having a valid title is essential to complete the sale.
Here’s what you need to know to request a duplicate car title in Pennsylvania.
If Your Vehicle Was Last Titled in Pennsylvania
To replace a lost or damaged title, you'll need to complete the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (Form MV-38O).
Once you've filled out the application, you can submit it in one of two ways:
Option 1: In Person
You can take your completed form and payment to:
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
1101 South Front Street
Harrisburg, PA 17104
If you apply in person, you can usually receive your duplicate title the same day. The fee for a duplicate title is $77.
Option 2: By Mail
If visiting in person isn’t convenient, you can mail your application and payment to:
PA Department of Transportation
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 68593
Harrisburg, PA 17104-2516
Mailed applications typically take 4 to 6 weeks to process, and the fee is still $77.
If Your Vehicle Was Last Titled in Another State
PennDOT can only issue titles for vehicles that were last titled in Pennsylvania. If your car was last titled in another state, you’ll need to contact that state’s motor vehicle agency to request a duplicate title through their process.
